Common Core State Standards

Maine is one of 45 states in the United States to adopt the Common Core State Standards (click the links on the right for Math and ELA Standards) as a basis for what students should know and be able to do. The Common Core Standards set the expectations for Math and Language Arts for each grade level across all subjects. This means that in Social Studies, for example, students are expected to read, write, speak and listen according to the grade level standards in Language Arts. They should also be able to analyze tables, graphs and data in Social Studies according to the grade level standards in Math.

Teachers of Science also use the Next Generation Science Standards, which expect students to apply science knowledge through the process of inquiry and investigation.

Visit the Maine Department of Education's web site for more information about the standards that teachers use for instruction for all students.
